Amid the visit of U.S. President JD Vance to India—part of a scheduled four-day trip—a suspected militant group carried out an attack in the city of Pahalgam, located in the Baisaran Valley of India. There, a group of armed men opened fire on tourists visiting the site, leaving at least 26 people dead.

This mountainous area is a territory fully claimed by India but partially administered by Pakistan. In this highly touristic region, the group reportedly descended from the mountains and approached the tourists before opening fire, in what police have described as a “terrorist attack.”

Due to the difficulty of accessing the area, helicopters were deployed to evacuate the wounded. According to authorities, most of the deceased tourists were Indian nationals. One of the tour guides who assisted in the rescue efforts stated, “I saw some men lying on the ground who looked dead.”

The Indian Prime Minister, who had met with JD Vance on Monday, stated on social media: “Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice. They will not be spared. Their evil agenda will never prevail. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and will only grow stronger.”

Additionally, the region’s top elected official, Omar Abdullah, declared: “This attack is much larger than any other we’ve seen against civilians in recent years.”

For his part, U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who was visiting India, described the incident on social media as a “devastating terrorist attack” and added, “In recent days, we’ve been captivated by the beauty of this country and its people. We stand with them as they grieve this horrific attack.”

The militant group known as the “Kashmir Resistance” claimed responsibility for the attack via social media, expressing outrage over the settlement of more than 85,000 “outsiders,” which, according to them, promotes demographic change in the region.
