Israel on Tuesday urged civilians to immediately evacuate Sana’a International Airport after launching major airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen, in response to a missile attack that struck near Israel’s main international airport on Sunday.

The Israeli military, which said it used 20 fighter jets and 50 air-dropped munitions, targeted what it described as “terrorist infrastructure” of the Iran-backed Houthis in the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah and surrounding coastal areas. A cement factory believed to house underground tunnel infrastructure and storage depots for Iranian-supplied arms was also struck.

“The airport area must be evacuated immediately,” warned IDF Arabic-language spokesperson Avichay Adraee in a statement posted on X, adding that remaining in the area posed a “severe danger.”

The Houthis have launched near-daily attacks against Israel and international shipping since the war in Gaza reignited in October. On Sunday, one of five missiles fired from Yemen evaded Israel’s Iron Dome defense system and exploded near Ben Gurion Airport, injuring four people.

The airstrikes on Yemen mark Israel’s first direct military response in the country since resuming its campaign in Gaza in March. Israeli officials warned that the Houthi escalation threatens freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and is part of a broader Iranian strategy to destabilize the region.

Meanwhile, Israel continues preparing for a possible expansion of its ground offensive in Gaza, with military and intelligence leaders discussing the next phase of operations under the ongoing “Chariots of Gideon” campaign.

The strikes come as regional tensions mount, drawing multiple state and non-state actors into a widening conflict front across the Middle East.
