BRUSSELS — The European Union (EU) has expressed its support for the recent United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution that establishes the basis for the creation of a stabilization force in the Gaza Strip, pledging to work towards its implementation.

During the European Commission’s daily press conference, Anouar El Anouni, the community spokesperson, stated that “the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803 is an important step to advance the comprehensive plan aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza.” El Anouni underscored that the resolution “consolidates the ceasefire, allows for large-scale humanitarian access, and opens the way for early recovery, reconstruction, and institutional reform in Gaza after two years of devastating conflict.”

The spokesperson emphasized that the text “lays the foundations for moving to the next phase,” including work related to the international stabilization force and the peace board. He added that the EU “will continue to collaborate closely with the United Nations and regional partners to support the implementation of the resolution in accordance with international law.” Furthermore, he requested that all parties respect the resolution’s provisions and apply the “comprehensive plan without delay.”

El Anouni concluded: “We are also ready to contribute to reviving a political process for a durable and sustainable peace based on the two-state solution and as described in the United Nations Security Council resolution.”

The approved resolution, based on the 20-point plan proposed by United States President Donald Trump for Gaza, contemplates the establishment of an international security force in the Palestinian enclave, assigning it law enforcement duties and placing it under the coordination of a body directed by Trump. Palestinian factions have demanded that such a force remain under United Nations authority, without Israeli intervention.

The mission will have among its main objectives maintaining security in the coastal enclave, protecting humanitarian corridors, monitoring the borders with Egypt and Israel, and actively participating in the demilitarization process, including the dismantling of weapons from non-state armed groups like Hamas. As a fundamental part of the resolution, explicit reference is included for the first time to a “credible path towards self-determination and Palestinian statehood.”

When asked about the possibility of deporting Gazans to South Africa, El Anouni noted that the EU’s position “remains the same”: “The EU rejects any attempt at demographic or territorial change in the Gaza Strip, and we support its unification with the West Bank… Gaza is an essential part of the future Palestinian State and there should be no more forced displacements.”

The inquiry came after South Africa accepted 130 Palestinians who arrived last Thursday at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg from Kenya, after initially being denied entry for not meeting immigration requirements, according to the Border Management Authority (BMA).
