NATO backs Lithuania’s border closure with Belarus amid ‘aerial threats’

Vilnius cites disruptions at its main airport from smuggling balloons and Russian air incursions as it weighs an indefinite, highly restrictive closure of the border.

Lithuania / Belarus border

VILNIUS, Lithuania — NATO has backed member state Lithuania in its decision to close its border with Belarus, a move prompted by a series of “aerial threats” that included Russian aircraft incursions and a novel “hybrid aggression” tactic using smuggling balloons.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda received renewed military and political support in a call with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The alliance has already reinforced its air surveillance operations in the Baltic state with forces from Spain, Hungary, and Germany.

The border closure was triggered after the airspace violations disrupted civilian operations at Vilnius International Airport for three consecutive nights, forcing flight cancellations and diversions. Officials blamed the disruptions on balloons originating from Belarus, which exiled Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called a “tool of hybrid aggression” and a front for cigarette smuggling.

The Lithuanian government is now weighing a plan to prolong the border closure indefinitely. According to Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene, the proposal would seal the border to all traffic except for diplomats and European Union citizens.
