The overnight bombing carried out by Russian forces on Ukraine’s capital proves that Russia is “the real obstacle” to peace, said EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas on Thursday.

“While claiming to seek peace, Russia launched a deadly airstrike on Kyiv. This is not peace-seeking, it is mockery,” the diplomat wrote in a post on X. “The real obstacle is not Ukraine, it is Russia.”

The United Nations also “strongly” condemned Thursday’s attack by the Russian military on Kyiv, which left at least nine people dead and more than 70 injured. It reiterated that “this senseless use of force must stop.”

“The large-scale attack carried out last night by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation against residential areas of Kyiv and surrounding regions is another blatant violation of International Humanitarian Law,” said UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine, Matthias Schmale.

He added, “The death toll is expected to rise, as emergency teams continue search and rescue operations among the rubble,” emphasizing that “civilians must never be a target” and noting that the strikes also caused widespread damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also condemned the attack, stressing that “it is extremely important for the world to see and understand what is happening,” and accused Russia of rejecting ceasefire proposals.

“It has been 44 days since Ukraine agreed to a full ceasefire and to halt the bombings. This was a proposal from the United States. Yet for 44 days, Russia has continued killing our people and avoiding firm pressure and accountability for its actions,” he said in a message posted on X.

These attacks, on which Moscow has not officially commented, occurred just hours after former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed to have reached an agreement with Russia to end the conflict in Ukraine, suggesting that it is now up to Zelensky to join in.

On Thursday, Russian authorities stated that the “massive attack” recently carried out on Kyiv, which left at least nine dead and over 70 injured, had targeted “enterprises” linked to the defense industry.

“The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation conducted a massive strike with long-range, high-precision weapons launched from air, land, and sea, as well as drones, targeting aviation, rocket, and space industries, mechanical engineering, and the armored industry, along with facilities producing rocket fuel,” said the Russian Ministry of Defense.

In a statement posted on its Telegram channel, the ministry claimed that “all intended targets were hit” and that “the objectives of the attack were achieved.” Ukrainian authorities have not confirmed whether any of the targeted facilities were indeed among those struck.
