Numerous powerful explosions rocked central Kyiv shortly after 1:00 AM (22:00 GMT) on Thursday, as Russian forces launched a new massive combined attack using missiles and drones on the Ukrainian capital and surrounding areas.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, at least eight people were killed and 54 others were injured in several districts during the assault, which caused destruction across various parts of the city. Klitschko also noted that a five-year-old child was taken to the hospital.

“Kyiv is suffering a combined attack,” wrote the capital region’s Military Administration on Telegram, reporting that ballistic missiles had been used in the strike. The agency warned that further waves of missiles and drones could still hit the capital in the coming hours and called on residents to seek shelter immediately.

This overnight assault on Kyiv comes after repeated calls from Ukraine in recent days for a ceasefire on long-range missile and drone attacks targeting civilian infrastructure—requests that Russia has refused to grant.

The last missile attack on the Ukrainian capital occurred on April 5, when at least three people were injured. Kyiv has been the target of sporadic attacks since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
